Guidelines for giving at fiscal year end

Make your gift count this fiscal year

Stanford’s fiscal year runs from September 1 to August 31. The end of the fiscal calendar is a time many are inspired to make charitable gifts.

If you choose to give to Stanford before the end of August, please use these helpful tips to make sure your gift counts in the 2024 fiscal year.

Stanford’s federal tax ID # is 94-1156365. The university is tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the IRS code.

What are the deadlines for gifts to be counted in FY24?

Cash or checks

Gifts of cash or check must be received in the Development Services office by Friday, August 30 at noon to be counted as a FY24 gift.

Checks should be made out to Stanford University. Please include a note telling us how you’d like your gift to be used. Checks should be sent to:

Credit cards

Credit card gifts made online:
Online gifts must be made by 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time on Saturday, August 31, 2024.

Credit card gifts by phone or mail:
All credit card gift information must be received by 5 p.m. Pacific Time on Friday, August 30, 2024 to ensure we can charge your card by the fiscal year deadline.

Never send your credit card information via email.

Stocks/securities

Please initiate security transfers by Monday, August 12. Please ensure you have communicated the following information to your Stanford contact:

  • The entity making the gift (donor)

  • The # of shares (or value) and the ticker of the anticipated gift

  • The gift designation

Wire transfers

Securities gifts must be received in our brokerage account by Wednesday, August 21 at 5 p.m. Pacific Time.

The online form is only for gift assets that are publicly-traded and listed on US exchanges. Please contact us for any other gift assets as the instructions on this form will not suffice for other types of assets, including mutual funds.
