Appreciated Securities Transfer

INFORMATION FOR ALL STOCK GIFT TRANSFERS

Appreciated securities can be transferred to Stanford University in a variety of ways. The most common methods are listed below with instructions. If you feel none of these meets your needs, please contact the Gift Securities Team at 650.721.1917.

All securities gifts should be registered or titled as follows:

The Board of Trustees of the Leland Stanford Junior University
Tax ID # 94-1156365

All securities gifts should reflect the following mailing address regardless of designation or department receiving the gift:

Stanford Gift Securities
P.O. Box 50810
Palo Alto, CA  94303

Effective September 1, 2018, Stanford will be required to pay a 1.4 percent tax on the amount by which net proceeds received from the sale of a donated asset exceed the donor’s tax basis (typically the original purchase price). To minimize Stanford's tax liability, we will be asking donors for information about their basis in donated assets. While we recognize that tax basis information may not always be available, any basis information that can be provided will be appreciated and will help to reduce the tax. Whether or not cost basis information is available, Stanford will greatly appreciate these gifts.

Please note that while the new law impacts Stanford's tax liability, it does not change the tax treatment for donors.
